Monkeying Around on Labor Day

Hope you all had a great Labor Day weekend! We loved having Michael home on Monday and it was a perfect day weather-wise, so we decided to enjoy one more must-do summer activity (and just in the nick of time - on the unofficial close of summer!) We made our way to St. Paul to visit the Como Park Zoo.

We took a spin on the carousel when we first arrived. And let me tell you, it's a great one! It's over 100 years old and had been at the State Fair for many decades (the fairgrounds are right near the zoo). The intricate details on the horses are amazing for it being so old. This beauty has been meticulously cared for and unlike most things that are a century old, this carousel was surprisingly zippy!

Who's with me on this one? I think monkeys, orangutans, and chimps are the best animals at the zoo! They are so funny! I could've camped at this habitat all afternoon.

Shortly after this, a baby orangutan came wandering over to the mom (or is it a dad?) Katelyn kept saying "bee bee" pointing at the little one. Am I seeing things or is this one smiling at the camera?!

Then we moved on to the indoor monkeys. This one looks to be as old as the carousel!

The zebras were a sight to see. Those stripes are simply works of art!

The giraffes were equally impressive - don't you love that perfect print? Katelyn seemed to like these best. One of them was almost 15 feet tall! (...the measurements on the wall came in handy for that stat :)

There's a tiger on the prowl! He's right behind us...

And this polar bear was so sweet! What a giant - his paws were as big as footballs. He was just relaxing by the water as a whole slew of people watched from behind the glass - this was the most popular exhibit by far!

The seal was friendly and gave us a wave! We were hoping to catch him in action playing with the soccer ball, but no luck that day.

Time for a quick sip and snack. We might be at the zoo and all, but those are just raisins, people!

And a look at the pretty flamingos rounded out our trip to the zoo. What a great day!

Katelyn, what a wonderful trip to the zoo! Aren't the necks of giraffe's just amazing! I'm with your mom on thinking the ape is smiling for the camera! They're so much like humans! And....it was fabulous to spend time with you at the ISU game today. You are one beautiful and sweet little girl (who happens to climb like a monkey)!! :-) Hugs!

Katelyn, I'm so glad you got to go to the zoo and see all the animals sleeping, waving and smiling at you! Papa and I laughed when you told us monkeys say, "ee-ee oo-oo!"
