Katelyn's Christmas Surprise

On her last day at school before a long holiday break (Michael is off work this week and staying home with Katelyn - stay tuned for more on Daddy Daycare in an upcoming post!), Katelyn surprised us with this special gift...

Her teachers had a little photo shoot of each baby and put them in an oversized stocking with a Santa hat on. They picked the best picture of each child to have printed with "Baby's First Christmas" on it and mounted the photo on snowflake patterned card stock. How creative and cute, don't you think? Michael and I just adore this picture!

We have a lot of pictures and stories to share of Katelyn's first Christmas, so stay tuned for when I am not falling asleep at the computer have a long enough block of time to blog about it! Until then, here's a sneak peek...

Phone Photos

Busy with the holidays and full of Christmas cookies, I'm lacking energy for a detailed blog post, but I recently uploaded the pictures from my phone and thought you might like to see a few. Enjoy!

Katelyn showing off her clapping skills (happy to be with Daddy:)...

Katelyn loves to stand up these days...

Two favorite pastimes: helping with laundry and playing DJ (okay, so maybe we just put the headphones on her for fun, but who knows, she might be a DJ someday like her Uncle Mitch was in college!)

Our happy girl showing off her sweet smile...

We're in Ames for the weekend and looking forward to celebrating Katelyn's first Christmas!

10 Months Old!

Yesterday Katelyn turned 10 months old! How is that even possible that she's now in the double-digits?! We are having a ton of fun with her these days and she brings us more smiles and laughs with each passing day.

(By the way, in these photos taken yesterday, you'll see she's got some hair sticking up like Dennis the Menace. When I picked her up from school on Thursday, they had her hair in a single sprout-like ponytail that stuck straight up at the top of her head! It was adorable - and the hair still stood upright after I took it out. I see hair bands, bows, and barrettes in our future!)

Here's a glimpse at what Katelyn is up to at 10 months old:

~ On the verge of taking her first steps. She stands up by herself and looks like she wants to step forward, but she always reaches for hands or something else to hold onto before making a move. She's cruising furniture like it's her job.

~ She also gets around by crawling. And if there were a speed limit for crawling, she'd probably have a few tickets by now! She squeals with delight when we chase after her and she crawls fast to escape us. Along with barrettes, a baby gate is also in our future!

~ Katelyn is quite vocal and loves to chatter. Lately she's been saying "ha-da" which we swear sounds like "hi, dad." One of her teachers at school is convinced she's saying her name, "hi, Dawn." :) She also says, "mmm-baaah," "dadada," "mama," and "ah-oh."

~ Clapping is a skill that has recently been resurrected from dormancy. During the end of the summer, she clapped a lot (but didn't always connect her hands together), but dropped it this fall. Now, it's back in full force. If we even say the word clap, she immediately puts her hands together and flashes a proud smile. She also likes to wave hello and bye-bye on occasion.

~ Katelyn still loves any non-toy item she can get her hands on. Her eyes light up when she sees a cell phone, a remote control, a camera, a spoon, Tupperware, pens, or a tube of chapstick! She also loves to empty out her laundry basket taking each item out one by one. In a room full of toys, this pastime makes me laugh because one day she'll likely despise a full laundry basket!

~ She is a lover! Katelyn give hugs liberally and has started to understand what kisses are too. When she gives hugs, they are usually accompanied with an "ooohhh" from Katelyn (she's repeating what we say when she gives us hugs - it's funny and oh so sweet!)

~ Her favorite things that are actually toys include: dolly, stacking blocks, books, her talking puppy from Grandma Debbie (in fact, one of the things it says is "hug me!" When Katelyn hears this, she leans down to hug the puppy :)

(Here's Katelyn perfecting one of two things: her surfing skills or her campaign wave. Can't you just see her behind the mic at a political rally?! Ha, ha!)

~ As you can see, she's not only a climber, but the girl is a daredevil! She's not afraid of much and had a good time standing up on the chair. Let's just say these monthly photo shoots have become a lot more work now she's on the go!

~ We no longer have to disguise fruits within veggies for Katelyn (most parents have to do the opposite!) She's become accustomed to fruits and she takes them down like a champ now. She still loves veggies and has started to eat finger foods too. Miss Independent likes to feed herself with those chunky little fingers!

~ And speaking of fingers, Katelyn loves to point at things with her index finger. She points to pictures in books, magnets on the fridge, and eyes on her dolly.

Happy 10-month birthday, Katelyn Clare! You are such a source of joy for us and it's so much fun to see you grow and change. Thank you for sharing all your smiles, giggles, hugs, and kisses with us!

Snowed In!

How appropriate that winter hasn't even "officially" started yet and my last two blog posts have the word SNOW in the title. They don't call it Minne-snow-ta for nothing, folks!

My parents came up for a visit last Friday and were planning to take off on Saturday, but due to a huge snowstorm, they were snowed in until Sunday (we didn't mind at all and I'm pretty sure they didn't either!)

Friday night, Michael and I had a friend's 30th birthday party to attend, so Katelyn stayed in with Gramma and Grampa as the snow started to fall. On Saturday, we hunkered down and only the guys left the house (and that was to shovel and take out Malone!)

As you can see, Katelyn loves to stand. She's *this close* to taking her first steps, but has yet to do so without holding on to something or someone.

What's a girl to do when she can't go outside in the snow storm? Why, comb her hair, of course!

Katelyn showing off her makeshift rattle: raisins in an empty water bottle. (What?? You have to be creative when you're snowed in!)

Another favorite pastime these days is for Katelyn to pretend to go night-night. Whenever we say night-night, she leans her head to her shoulder. And then we say "wake up!" and she pops right up. Here she is playing this game with Gramma Kathy...

Hoodie time! Welcoming Grampa Ron back inside after he shoveled out their car.

Katelyn made the rounds during our snow in. She played in her room, our room, the living room, the kitchen, and got kissed by everyone in the house (including Malone)...

Katelyn is used to me hiding behind my camera, but it still doesn't stop her from reaching for it every chance she gets!

We had a fun weekend with special visitors and a big ol' snow storm! Thanks for visiting, Gramma and Grampa!

Snow Bunny

There's something really great about a fresh snowfall, don't you think? It's pretty, it brightens everything up, and it's fun to play in! Last weekend we took advantage of some fresh powder and Katelyn enjoyed her first sledding experience (albeit just a spin around the front yard :) Enjoy the photos!

Does this picture say Minnesota Winter or what?

Katelyn was rockin' her super cozy Ugg boots from Aunt Cassie and Uncle Jason!

Here's Katelyn enjoying her new ride. (And for the record, her arms were extended straight out for the entire sledding experience. Too many layers? Umm, maybe. But cozy and warm? You know it! :)

"Weeeee! Sledding is fun! Thanks for pulling me around, Daddy! Hey, it beats carrying me up and down a sledding hill, doesn't it? Don't worry, that will come :)"

Christmas Comes Early + Tub Time

Christmas arrived a few weeks early for Katelyn when I gave her my old cell phone. She has been on cloud 9 with that little gadget in her hands! I thought she would like it, but I think the girl is addicted... already... and she can't even talk on it yet!

(This is the face she makes when she's concentrating really hard. Fierce focus pushing those little buttons!)

"Hello? Katelyn here."

She likes to hold the phone up to our ears too - perhaps that means we're on it too much!

Katelyn's pointer finger has been out in full force since she discovered it recently :)

Being the daredevil that she is, Katelyn's been standing with no hands lately for several seconds at a time. (Trust me that the saying, "Look ma, no hands... look ma, no teeth" takes on a whole new reality after last week's events.) She usually plops down on her bottom after about 10 seconds.

Does this tub look familiar? That's because we've had it since Katelyn was born, but with her leg hanging over the side, it might be time to upgrade! Look how much she's grown since this post four months ago (and that hair!).

Katelyn loves the bath and squeals with delight when we start to say, "Bath time!!"

How cute is this soapy little head and curl/unicorn horn?

You know how much I like photo comparisons, so I couldn't resist this opportunity. Here's Katelyn at 5 days old during her sponge bath...

Post-bath snuggles in her ducky towel!

Happy Friday! Hope you have a great weekend!
